Qualifying for Medicare

Medicare is the Federal government's subsidized health insurance program. While most persons have to wait until their retirement age to qualify for Medicare, individuals who qualify for Social Security Disability become eligible for Medicare after a 2 year waiting period.

Medicare coverage is divided into parts A-D. Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) represents the most basic Medicare coverage. Eligible persons have to enroll for Part B (medical insurance coverage), which can include premiums that vary according to your benefit level. Social Security typically withholds your premiums from your monthly benefit amount upon enrolment.

Note that Medicare is different that Medicaid, which is a subsidized health program for low income individuals with limited assets.

Additional information about Medicare can be located at the Social Security Administration's website.
